Property Shoot Padstow

Airbnb property shoot

Sam got in touch with me recently, to arrange a property photo shoot of her three bedroom house in Padstow. Sam and her husband had recently renovated the house, creating a light and airy yet cosy home away from home.

Photographing Outdoor light

A top consideration when shooting property is how to balance the outside light with the inside light. For a property shoot it is a best case scenario to have a blue sky day happening outside the window. This looks most attractive and gives the image depth. However, living in Cornwall, our weather can sometimes be a little changeable!

Luckily on the day I went to Sam’s, the light was really good. This is really important as it lit up the surrounding countryside which was something Sam really wanted to show. The sky wasn’t always blue, but it shows cloud definition and detail in the sky where possible. If the sun is directly behind the cloud it will be too bright to be anything other than white. Ideally you want the sun behind you or to the side.

Indoor Outdoor flow

When shooting property I try to show indoor outdoor flow and as much natural looking light as possible. Therefore Sam’s house was great for this as the upstairs was all open plan. The spacious dining room had a bifold door which opened out onto a deck. A private and sunny spot to relax on and enjoy the views of the surrounding countryside and fields.

Open plan spaces

Just off the dining room was the kitchen. The Kitchen was really well fitted out and had great natural light.

Next to the kitchen was the lounge, which although open plan, felt private and cosy. Overall the house has a light and airy feel throughout which is really welcoming.

Being aware of light, is one of the most important things to consider on a property photo shoot. Open plan spaces, like Sam’s house can be tricky to photograph as there may be differences in light in the different rooms. For instance if an area in the space has no windows it will be substantially darker than the rest of the space, which will look odd. I always come to a property photo shoot armed with lights, stands and tripods just in case to balance it out.
